Time (PDT) Speakers Description
9:00am - 9:50am Bradley Olsen, MIT Standard Representations for Polymer Data. As we move to an era of ever-larger data and more sophisticated algorithms for analyzing it, the bottleneck in polymer research increasingly lies at the stage of curating or experimentally generating large and useful data sets. To allow us to quickly assemble data sets from many small disparate sources and to compare and learn from this data, standard and machine-friendly ways of organizing the data are required. This talk will present a pedagogical introduction to the challenges in organizing data related to the synthesis, characterization, and processing of polymers with an emphasis on emerging methods.

 Stretching / Networking: 9:50am - 10:20am (PDT)

 Break: 10:20am - 11:10am (PDT)

Time (PDT) Speakers Description
11:10am - 12:00pm Alán Aspuru-Guzik, University of Toronto Self-driving Laboratories for Materials Discovery. In this talk, I will describe our group’s interdisciplinary research towards the acceleration of molecular discovery. We focus on the discovery of small-molecule-based materials such as solid-state organic light emitting diodes and organic lasers I will discuss artificial intelligence models for the generation of molecular candidates with particular properties, forward-synthetic space prediction methods that are amenable to automation, and Bayesian-optimization driven experimentation. In particular, for the design of organic lasers, we have designed a Chemspeed synthesis machine/HPLC-MS/laser characterization self-driving lab. I will discuss the synergies and opportunities with small-molecule drug discovery as well as process optimization. Several of the tools we have developed have been translated to these fields.
12:00pm - 12:50pm Gigi Lin, Apeel Sciences, Colin Harvey, Hexagon Bio, and Andrew Cal, Mango Materials  Panel: Careers in Biomaterials. Our industry panelists will answer questions (submitted in advance) from Summer School attendees on topics including: how to transition from academia to industry, considerations for how to identify company fit, what steps can be taken now to build skills, gain connections, and increase competitiveness for an entry level position, and understanding industry outlook post-pandemic.
